Carol Paiva, RN, BSN, MSN

Carol is a registered nurse and the mother of child who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 4.

Still in the ICU with her son, she read the Pediatrics article "Management of Type 1 Diabetes with a Very Low-Carbohydrate Diet" and was able, over the next 5 years, to keep her son’s A1C between 4.6 and 5% by employing low carb, regular insulin, and syringes.

She has a master degree in obstetrics and a neonatology specialty, spending one year working at a NICU. She has also authored several publications.

Carol’s mission is to show that through a low carb lifestyle you can obtain normal blood sugars; that families and kids can thrive, regaining hope for a healthy and joyful life with diabetes.

PATRICK ROWE, DIAVERGE DIABETES

Pat Rowe, PH.D., MPH - community & tech advisor

Patrick was diagnosed with T1D in 1991 at 13 years of age.  Father to one child with T1D (age 7) and another in the early stages of T1D not yet on insulin (age 5).  Until about ten years ago Patrick managed his T1D in the typical way and maintained ‘good’ blood sugar control but with constant large swings from low to high.  Switching to a low-carb eating strategy improved his glucose control and virtually eliminated the scary lows and constant highs.

Patrick’s interest in science, health, and T1D led him to pursue a degree in biology, Masters in Public Health, Ph.D. in Molecular Medicine and then a postdoctoral fellowship studying type 1 diabetes. Realizing his passion for helping others with diabetes, he decided to change the direction of his career and is now a Certified Health Coach.
